A city'shistory,paintedby hand
Every sign had an author. Almost none of them were named.
Through the shop fronts, bus panels and market stalls of one city, Paint the Town follows the last generation who learned to letter with a brush.
With commentary from
The makers
The film began as a walk: one street, photographed sign by sign before the shop fronts were refitted. It took six years, four cities and a great many cups of tea in the back rooms of paint shops to turn that walk into a story.
“To read a city’s hand-painted signs is to read the people who built it, one brushstroke at a time.”
“It is about lettering the way a cookbook is about salt. Really it is about who gets remembered.”
