Paint the TownFilm

Behind the camera

Filmmakers

Three people, six years, four cities. The film was made slowly, at the speed of the work it is about.

Director

Kemi Adeyinka

Trained as a typographer and spent ten years setting other people's words before she picked up a camera. This is her first feature. She photographed the first two hundred signs herself, on foot.

Producer

Jonah Reyes

Has produced four documentaries about people who make things by hand. Found the film's archive in a paint merchant's back room, in ledgers that recorded every tin sold and who it was for.

Editor

Ines Duarte

Cut the film from four hundred hours of footage. The rule in the edit was that no sign appears on screen for less time than it takes to read it aloud.

“Patient, exact and unexpectedly funny. A film made the way its subjects work.”
